Trena, Archie, Bali & Tequila and the Powell River branch

THANK YOU once again to Audrey, volunteer manager for the Powell River branch for all of your help ! Most recently for the four animals shown in this posting.

Archie is a senior fellow who found himself in care after being picked up by animal control with no ID and no one looking for him. Once his holding period was up, Archie was brought to us to find a new home. Hard to understand (and sad), but even after we listed Archie in the local paper as being Found, no one phoned about him.

A sweetie, Archie quickly won over everyone who met him - as all seniors do - and after being groomed by our volunteer dog walker and professional groomer Amanda, Archie was soon a new man with a fluffy and clean coat. (The picture shown was from when he first arrived.) Archie also enjoyed soaking up the attention from staff and volunteers alike, hanging out in the play yards and heading out for walks. He was a busy boy.

But, Archie had also been neglected by his previous owner(s) and needed to see the dentist for his less than pristine teeth. So an appointment was made, and off Archie went to the animal hospital.

After having 7 teeth pulled, Archie was soon on his way to a foster home in Powell River that Audrey had lined up; an elderly couple who were looking for a walking companion had volunteered to care for Archie while he recuperated from his dental work . . . . . it didn't take long - a few hours - and they fell in love with Archie. Archie himself seemed to think he was home, as soon as he entered the house he walked over and sat between the couple as if he had always lived there. Seems like Archie just may have found himself a new home but for now he is being fostered while he recoups. But his foster home did submit an application to adopt him by the next morning :-)

Trena! Anyone who visits the shelter knows Trena. Trena arrived July 2009 as a skinny little stray with an ulcerated eye. With a touch of attitude right from the start, Trena settled into the Communal room once her eye was all fixed up and proceeded to set the ground rules for the room. Friendly and affectionate with people, Trena didn't care too much for other cats, but tolerated most and tended to keep to herself.

Months went by, Trena waited. Even though she ran and greeted everyone who entered the Communal room with a meow meow, no one picked Trena to go home with them . . . could be because Trena would initiate playing and petting sessions but would then decide she'd had enough and out of nowhere would give a whack whack, surprising anyone petting her at the time.

More time went by, Trena gained weight and developed a paunch, staked out her own prime spots in the room and proceeded to watch hundreds of cats come and go from the Communal room. During that time it was discovered that she also had an abscess near her back end which was causing her some discomfort. Once her abscess was cleared up Trena became a new gal, she always was friendly and affectionate but now there was no swatting or smacking. But still she struggled to find a home.

After her 14-month anniversary came and went, with no home in sight. We pulled out all the stops and dressed Trena up in the famous Pink Flamingo bandana to help her stand out! But even that didn't help. One day last week our Branch Manager, Shannon, phoned and left Audrey a message about "a cat that had been at the shelter for 14 months and really needed into a home environment, did Audrey have any foster homes available ?" Little did Shannon know that it was Audrey's hubbie that heard the message . . . . hubbie has a soft spot for cats and is called a "cat whisperer" by Audrey.

It didn't take long before Trena was heading to Powell River; to their home! After spending a few days in a special trailer set up for Trena and a few sessions with the "cat whisperer" Trena made her way into the living room . . . the last we heard a few days ago, Trena was setting the ground rules for the three dogs and seven cats she is now living with. She is also sharing her life with five goats, chickens, ducks and rabbits . . . which we don't think she's met yet ! We can't wait to hear more about Trena's new life. After 14 months, Trena is finally home.

Remember Bali and Tequila? These bonded girls who had lived together all of their lives were transferred to the Powell River branch and into a foster home in May

Great news for Bali and Tequila! Their foster home, who adored them, recently decided that she could not part with this bonded pair and has now formally adopted the two girls!
