The "Z" girls find their new homes

Zim was transferred here from the Kamloops branch in February to help him find a new home after finding himself there in November 2011 when his people moved out and left him behind; fortunately the landlord was looking out for Zim and took him to the Kamloops branch for help.

An easy going cat who has a non-stop purr and a non-stop appetite for being held and petted - he will happily settle in to a petting session for hours if time permits - Zim also enjoys being around kids and doesn't mind other animals but might prefer to be the only cat in his new home, if possible.  Though while hanging out in the Communal Room Zim tended to keep to himself and didn't cause any problems.  After waiting almost six months for a home, Zim has now gone to join a couple in their home where he will be able to relax and be spoiled  . . . . as he is the one and only cat in their life

Zoe is another Kamloops Branch alumni, after being transferred here a short time ago; she originally found herself in care at 8-years-old due to there being "too many dogs" in the home she was living in.   A sweetie with a calm and peaceful disposition Zoe is an aaffectionate girl who can be a tad shy and submissive . . . she enjoys laying with her head on your knee and receiving a gentle belly rub and body massage, a great way to unwind at the end of the day for both you, and Zoe.  Zoe lived with other dogs and cats in her previous home and does know how her basic obedience commands but with her doe-eyed look and graceful and elegant style, Zoe is not unlike a deer in that she can be easily startled by loud noises and sudden movements so was hoping for an adult home without all the hustle and bustle of a large and busy family home.  This sweet girl didn't have to wait long for her new home and has now gone to join a couple and also has a K-9 buddy, a 8-year-old male Shepherd, in her new home. .

Wonderful news for the "Z" girls :-)

Porter, Frida and Wiley say bye

Porter found himself homeless due to literally being beaten up by the other cats in his home, leaving bald spots on his head and body where his fur had been ripped out . . . he arrived with a few bare patches, the one on the top of his head being the most prominent.  It was the size of a twoonie.  Porter definitely wasn't coming out the champ in the fights :-)  A friendly, sociable and comical young cat, Porter is a flirt who enjoys interacting with people and engaging in playful antics and basically just being a cutie and it didn't take long for him to find his new home . . . one where he is the one and only and doesn't have to worry about having to defend himself again.

Frida is a young dog who first found herself with us as a tiny pup transferred from the Prince Rupert Branch last year, she sadly found herself looking for a new home again due to her family moving to the Lower Mainland and Frida not adjusting well to the new environment she was living in. Still puppyish in her behaviour Frida loves to play and when she arrived back was still working through the mouthing stage but did have sit, stay, lie down and shake a paw down pat!   A sweet girl, Frida enjoys playing with other dogs, playing in water and playing fetch - though is learning to drop the ball :-)  Frida has now gone to live with a family in New Westminster after they spotted her on-line and travelled over her to meet her, there is an easy going 13-year old dog in the home that couldn't make the trip but everyone was going to meet "away from home" for the meet and greet once they arrived back in New West . . . pictured is Frida with one of her new family members.

Wiley found himself in care in October 2011 after being found behind a local veterinary hospital, with a large abscess on his cheek.  But even after receiving treatment the wound on his cheek was having a hard time healing because Wiley, being the youngster he is, was quite ingenious at finding ways to interrupt the healing process . . .Wiley tried everything from rubbing, scratching and who knows what to get at his cheek. So his cone stayed on, and on.  Every time it came off, Wiley went to work scratching and rubbing his cheek.  He was determined.  After a few months, some spent in the Isolation room, Wiley was moved to the Communal room with the other cats and did just fine; causing no problems except for maybe brightening their day with his antics.  An outgoing, chatty and personable cat, Wiley was ready to fine a home.  But no one was interested in adopting a cat that either had a cone on, or a sore on his cheek.

What to do?

Our Satellite Adoption Center, Sechelt Animal Hospital. offered to take Wiley, to not only help him find a new home but also look further into what was causing the constant irritation / sore on his cheek.  So off Wiley went to SAH where he received further treatment, lov'in and exposure to a whole new demographic of people.  But even then Wiley was still determined to scratch his cheek, and again spent many a day with a cone on.  He was so used to wearing a cone that he didn't even know he was wearing one.  After considering several options, to stop Wiley opening up his cheek again, Soft Paws were the solution that did the trick!  After outfitting Wiley with Soft Paws, he could no longer scratch at his cheek . .  . . which allowed it to heal.  Finally !

Wiley has now gone to join his new family who first saw him at Sechelt Animal Hospital, there are several other cats in the home including a youngster that Wiley should enjoy hanging with.  Phew.  It took almost 7 months, but Wiley has found his new home.

Happy Ending - Rufus

Rufus is a cat that waited a long time for a home . . . and no one who met him while he was at the shelter could understand why, he is just such a cool cat . . . easy going, laid back, good with other cats, affectionate and good with dogs!  He also had a sad story, after being evicted from his home when baby arrived . . . but still a home eluded Rufus for almost 6 months.  Rufus was adopted April 18th after waiting since October 2011 ~ yes, that's not a typo, October 2011 is when he first found himself homeless.   Here's his story http://sunshinecoastspca.blogspot.ca/2012/04/rufus-and-ava.html

Though Rufus waited six months for a home it looks like the wait was well worth it, Rufus has just sent us an update on how he is doing since he left us :-)

Hi Everyone

Just an update on my new home. Roy & Rayana are petty good, nice meals, warm bed, Oh yes I get to sleep on Rayana's bed and have snuggles. Charlie is the other cat they have here and he is getting use to having me around. At first Charlie would hiss but he is all talk and no action. I tell him to "get over it" and he wonders off. Charlie is even coming around.  He will play with me, but still has a hard time of it when I play with him.  I will get him around my paw yet! Got my teeth fixed as soon as I got moved in with Roy & Rayana.  I feel so much better.

This is the life I have always wanted. Food, Love cuddles and brushing.

This is a cats life.

Hoping everyone there finds their life home as I have.

Happy Ending ~ Jojo

Jojo first found herself in care in November 2011 at the Prince Rupert Branch, due to there being "too many dogs in the home";  Jojo spent several months in Prince Rupert waiting for a home but after three months and no home in sight Jojo was transferred here to help her find a new home . . . . once she arrived, everyone quickly fell in love with Jojo - employees and volunteers alike -  a happy, wiggly and chunky girl, Jojo had a sparkle in her eyes that brightened everyone's day.  But a home still eluded Jojo.  At 8-years-old people thought she was too old or could not see past her "ball obsession"; after living the shelter life for so long Jojo had found her only constant was a ball (any ball) and she would pack a ball around where ever she went - it was the only thing she had control over in her life.

Unbeknown to Jojo though, someone had noticed her on-line and was interested in bringing her into their life, but due to distance (Texada to Wilson Creek, two ferry rides) and work it was hard for them to meet Jojo.  Time went by and Jojo started to become a bit sad in the kennels, 5-months is a long time for any dog to be living in a kennel environment, so Jojo was transferred to the Powell River Branch where she could live in a foster home and experience home life once again :-)

Once in Powell River, much closer to Texada, it was only a short time before Jojo was on her way to Texada Island . . . . her new family have sent an update on how she is doing which I'm sure anyone who knew Jojo while she was here will be happy to read as she touched so many people in her quest to find a home.

Jojo in her new home, already looking slimmer :-)

Jojo officially joined our family on May 10th but we'd had our eye on her for many months before that. We had to say goodbye to our old dog Muddy late last summer, another Sunshine Coast SPCA dog who we adopted at the age of 5 and had him for the next 10 years. He was so special so it was with great care that we began our search for another rescue dog to join Finnigan, also an SPCA dog, who was quite lonely without his pal for the past 8 years of his life.

We saw Jojo's posting on the SPCA shelterbuddy website and wondered if she might be a good match for Finn. They were the same age and even looked a bit like each other with their curly tails so we thought she might also be a Basenji cross like Finn. But living on Texada and working full time, we didn't line up a trip to head to the lower coast with our dog to meet Jojo. But then we were told that Jojo was becoming 'sad' at the shelter after having been there for months as well as at the Prince Rupert SPCA for a few months prior to that and she was being sent to a foster home in Powell River! Within a few days I went to meet her and thought she was wonderful. The following week, my husband and our dog came with me to meet her again and go for a long walk on the beach. Both dogs got along so we packed her up and took her home.

Jojo is happy about EVERYTHING!! She loves life, despite all she's been through and it's so great to see and it's also contagious. She loves to see us, loves to be with Finnigan, loves to eat, loves to drink, loves to munch on grass, loves to do rollies, loves to run, carry sticks, chase balls but she especially loves 'walkies' time and will make the funniest, loudest, ROO ROO ROO sound to express her excitement and joy about the upcoming event (which happens half a dozen times a day but never loses it's magic for her). So we have decided to name her Roo with her full name being Ruby. We feel very blessed to have her and the two dogs act like they've known each other forever. They don't like to be apart and Roo will whimper if she can't find Finn for a moment if he wanders off a bit while we're walking. They race and play together and rough house and share a big, huge doggy bed at night. These two will grow old together and we're so glad they are now a pair.

We do have to be very careful that she doesn't mix with our cats because for now, she thinks they are something to chase and bark at but in time, we hope that we can have everyone be one big, blended family. And if this is not possible, we will work around this and make two 'zones' so there won't be any issues. But we are hopeful that things will all fall into place in time.

Thank you to all of the wonderful SPCA staff and foster volunteers from all 3 shelters who helped Jojo along her journey to find her way into our hearts. We think you are the best and without your dedication and hard work, new beginnings like this would not be possible. With much gratitude, The Frasers.

P.S. A few pics of Jojo and Finnigan together and even one of Finnigan with our old dog Muddy. It was a long 6 months for Finnigan to be alone before we found Jojo. He's always had a companion and finally does again. :0)

Boots, Sweets and Spuis leave us for their new homes

Spius first found himself in care at the Kamloops branch after being found in an abandoned farm house in Ashcroft with about 40 other cats and kittens.  Spius was transferred here to help him find a new home but even though he is young, outgoing, friendly and tried his very best to come across as a sociable and easy going fellow ~ which he is ~ it still took some time for Spius to find a new home.  But that he did, and he has his work cut out for him  . . . Spius has gone to live with Tracker (adopted November 2011) another cat, a teenage boy and a baby on the way!  Plenty happening to keep him occupied!

Sweets is another Kamloops branch alumia, though she was only recently transferred here after arriving at the Kamloops SPCA in January .  . . originally found abandoned with her son Smokey, Sweets is a young cat who arrived in Kamloops quite nervous of people but while there come along in leaps and bounds and was on her way to becoming the attention-loving kittie everyone knew was deep down inside.  Though she does still have some lingering shyness and was hoping for a quieter home environment were she could relax and be given time to settle in.  Sweets has quickly found herself a new home here after a woman visited the shelter during the Open House, she spent a lot of time with the cats, wanting to make the right decision.  Last weekend she came back to visit with the cats again, there were quite a few cats she had short listed and she again spent time with each of the cats . . . it was a hard decisionn.  But in the end, Sweets was the one !

Boots was also transferred here from the Kamloops branch ~ she hitched a ride the same time Sweets did, in the same vehicle ! A lovely girl who lived with other dogs in her home where she also enjoyed playing with the resident cats, Boots is also a quick learner and smart . . . she thrives on learning and would blossom in home that could both stimulate and challenge her mind, along with providing the physical exercise a young dog craves and requires.  Thought she looks a bit sad in her picture, Boots really is a happy girl . . . a camera will sometimes quickly drop the ears and produce a sad look :-) Boots has now gone to live in Burnaby after her new people had been trying for a while to adopt a dog from several lower mainland branches but were always third-in-line for a dog needing a home.  After seeing Boots on-line they caught the ferry over here to meet Boots .  . who caught the ferry back with them
